  • We are Commanders

    We are Commanders.
It is our job to manage risks.
It is our responsibility to speak up when things are not right.
It is our duty to take charge and put things right when things go wrong.
We are ultimately responsible for everything that happens and does not happen under our watch.

    BG Chan Chun Sing
    Chief of Army

Although this quote might be directed at military personnel, I believe that this is really applicable to all those that are working or organises events. After all, everyone is a leader / “commanders” in their own right. Be it organisers of events, managers that take care of teams or even just being participants. We are ultimately responsible for what happens to us and we will speak up when things are not right. Sometimes we might say “leave it to the younger ones to learn and make mistakes”, but I don’t believe that should be the right way, afterall if you know the actions taken is a mistake why let them learn from that. Wouldn’t be it better to let them learn from the mistakes that you don’t even know or foresee?

Well being seniors, we can advise all we want but in the end, whether you want to listen is up to you. Afterall, you would be the one that is ultimately responsible for everything that happens and does not happen under your watch. 6 more month till the end, work hard, do your best.

For me, there is less than 80 days left. Here and there, operations are starting. Everyone is working hard moving towards it, can see the day getting closer and closer. From the website to the clock at the corner in front of ION. From the things that need to be done, to the things that have been done. IT’S GETTING CLOSER……

Another quote that I would remember, “the only way to avoid making mistakes is not to do anything. And that…will be the ultimate mistake”, cause we are in the end responsible for everything under our watch.

  • Ride to Ringit

Today’s ride to Ringit was quite an interesting one. A lot of first for me. Started off a little late today. but we got to Pengerang Jetty at 1130. Then went on to collect our bikes from the local shop. Headed to Ringit for lunch. Along the way saw the SMUX group heading back. Got to lunch point at 1300. Lunch was still ok. Set off at 1400. Found out that one of the bikes had a flat. So the guys had to take turns to ride it back. Just as we headed out of the town, It started to rain. But due to the lack of time we pushed on. As we got closer to the shop, it rain stopped. Got there like 1530. Then got sent to the Jetty. There was quite a number of people there. But due to our group size, we waited and waited. Really thought that we would not be going back. But at last, quite late at about 1730, we finally got a boat back to Singapore. The boat was new and had air-con in it. Reached back to Singapore at about 1800.

    Quite an adventure. haha 😀

  • Altius II – Day 1

Today is the first day of the trip. We reach the hotel early and spend the whole day lazing around the hotel area. Sleeping and eating. Ate with ben, lionel, wei wen, calvin for breakfast . Then lunch went to eat at some store. For dinner had KFC. Tomorrow would the start of the cycling. Let’s do it.

  • SMUX Elections

Well today went for SMUX Elections, and saw a new set of crew being elected into it. Although I was not one of them, I did took the week to think about whether I wanted to vote at all or not. Considering that someone of interest is running. And that once in crew, it would be a busy term for any of them. So it like if you vote and the person gets in, then busy how?? If you don’t vote and the person don’t get in?? That’s also another ‘how’ question as JJ would put it.

Well, I went, I voted, the someone got in. Well, that’s it. Time to slow down and just take it easy. Look and see how everything works out. See first lah.

Next week going to dive and seriously thinking about Tec Diving. But the cost of the equipments would really be something that needs to be considered…

Well that’s it for the latest update.

  • KL – Sing Cycling Expedition

    Stage Zero
On the 5th of August was the start of the KL – Sing Cycling Expedition. We gathered in school and prepared our bikes for the bus ride up to Port Dickson. Everyone was on time, maybe everyone just can’t wait to start at all. We went for dinner and when we came back did the final touch up on our bikes. Then off we went cycling to Lavender MRT Station. Once there, we waited for our bus to arrive. We loaded up our bikes when it arrived and loaded up into the bus. A small group of 3 went off in our safety car that would be with us for the whole trip.

Early morning (6th August) we arrived at our hotel at Port Dickson, after taking sometime to direct the bus driver to the location. It was 4am in the morning and we could only check in at 8am. So out came the tarp and sleep we went. Morning came and off a group of us went to find breakfast. It was quite a nice and cheap meal. Packed breakfast for the rest we were taking care of the bikes.

Once we were able to check in, we brought our bikes to our rooms and rested for a while. At 10am, off I went with Marcus, Fengru, JJ & Zaoyi to recce the route for the next day as it is quite complicated compared to the rest of the trip. Off we went towards Melaka, along the way try to test whether the drivers understand the instructions that was already written down. Quite funny when they made mistakes and we just kept quiet and just laugh. Once we reach Melaka, we settled in our extra bikes in the hotel that the rest of the team would need when they arrived. Lunch was in Melaka, as it would be late by the time we got back to Port Dickson. Lunch was dim sum and it was just ok. After lunch, we went back to Port Dickson and when we got back, the rest was still not back from lunch. So waited for them to come back. And once they are back, we had our briefing by Marcus about the timeline for the next day. After the briefing, it was time for a rest before dinner. Dinner was questionable, looking at the size of the servings, most of us thought that we would be hungry within an hour. After dinner, went to see the sunset and then back to the hotel to sleep.

    Stage Distance Cycled: 0 KM
    Total Distance Cycled: 0 KM

    Stage One
7th August, the start of Stage 1, woke up at 3 am and started changing. Got to the lobby at 330. One session of photo taking and it is 4am and time to start the ride to Melaka. It was still dark and there was a void of cars on the road. Just us and the night and the cool morning air. The feeling was really nice, the pace was slow and comfortable, giving all of us a good warm up. As we picked up the pace, everyone was happy about it, although It was still quite dark and some of the road are not well-lighted, making looking out for potholes quite a hard thing to do. But we survived it. As we continued to make our way through the dark morning towards Melaka, going down straight roads that feels long. We finally made it to Melaka a little while after day break. Going right into the morning traffic. All of us got behind the safety car and follow it as it guided us through the confusing one-way road of Melaka and finally reaching the Hotel.

After settling down in our hotel, the whole team went for lunch, going to the famous chicken rice store in Melaka. The food compared to the rest of the days can be said to be not really good. Then after lunch, had a short briefing from Marcus and off we all went for a walk to the nearest shopping mall. The walk itself was quite long and it took us like 45 minutes before we reach the shopping centre.

  • Road Trip – Recce for KL-Sing

On Thursday (30 July) went for a road trip to recce the route for the KL-Sing Biking trip that I would be going for next week. The road trip was really good, we covered more than 800+ km within a 24 hr period, travelling the whole journey that we planned for, that would take 5-6 days, in that time period.

Funny situations like the side windows don’t open made going pass customs more unique and funny. And see how the customs officers have to double check each person with the passports, cause the pictures are somewhat different is funny too.

First time driving down the north-south highway, and it was a learning experience for me too. Now I know what is an exit and a rest stop. Experienced the different driving styles that people have and got complained that I’m a back-seat driver.

Shared with them all things that I have been keeping to myself for some time now. Now 4 more persons know about it. Still not too sure what I should do, but I guess I know the direction better. But she’s so busy….. Well, just have to make her make time bah.

I’ll see what happens next bah. Can’t wait for KL-Sing.

  • More Updates…..

It’s 1 whole month since my last update. So what happened??

Well, I was part of the torch relay for AYG being a liaison officer to help instruct the carriers of the torch on how to use it, carry it, etc. Was quite an experience to be able to talk to people like Teo Ser Luck. Then my next involvement in AYG was being the Media Operations personnel at SAFRA Yishun for the shooting competition. Quite interesting to be able to see how this side of things work and what the media have to do all the time.

SMUX camp was the next event on my calendar. It was really a fun experience to be able to organise this camp once again with a different team of people. They really made this camp such a wonderful experience for the participant and me. Well this would be the last event that I would be organising within SMUX itself.

Yanzi’s concert was really wonderful. A lot, a lot better than her last concert that I went for. This time the whole concert was a non-stop continuous show that never seen to end. This is also the first time that she danced so much, like almost every other song she is dancing. Really thank my dear friend for taking time to go for the concert with me. Thank you, you know who you are.

17 July Overnight ride till 18 July morning, went to crash the night bike recce and had a good time riding with them although the crashers were equal to the number of GLs that attended. But at the end it was a wonderful ride.

19 July Morning, went for the KL-Sing training session that was changed to a local ride. Went up Mount Fader and down West Coast highway, then up north to kranji, then south back to school. Was a fast and fun ride.

24 July Overnight ride till 25 July morning, drove the car to ECP so that could drive home at the end of the ride. Cycled all the way up to Yishun Stadium, then went round the night bike route with the rest. Was quite fun. Will see if my friend can figure out where the second burger went to. haha.

Internship, well, it has been, up till now a wonderful experience for me. Being able to work and experience the army life once again. But thinking back, in terms of project scope and ability to complete the project, I think I should had try to accept a small workload somewhat knowing that all IT projects have a common result of being delayed and not up to standard. Hope at least I would be able to complete what is most critical for the users so that at least they have something that is somewhat useful.

Well, so what is coming up next for me.

First would be the end of my internship and the start of me having to write a report for OCS and also to pass a copy to MINDEF side.

Next would be KL-Sing Cycling trip, having to cycle from Port Dickson back to Singapore.

After that would be the AHM after all running is what keeps me going.

Mayday Concert would be on 29 August, still trying to find people to go with me for this. And also just relised that Night Bike would be on the same day. Think I’ll likely have to load the bike in the car and try to find them after the concert.

Well that all till the end of August. Will update as much as I can. I hope.

  • Update for Plans for the Summer

It’s 26th of June and almost half of Summer has gone past. So what have I completed.

Well for SMU Adventure Race, it was quite fun even being just a helper. Moving stuff and all. Find that the race was quite a success as everything seem to have went well. Although after watching the show Sports@SG that featured the NTU Adventure Trail Challenge, I felt that there is still a lot of improvement that SMUX can have for their adventure race like having more elements of adventure in it.

SMU Ad Race, The Back Stage, Day 0

SMU Ad Race, The Back Stage, D Day Part 1

SMU Ad Race, The Back Stage, D Day Part 2

Raw Duathlon was quite good, just that I had an accident during that event. Got knocked from the back by someone on my bike. Still completed the event and overall the event was good just that the location was quite open for the running part making it quite hot during the end.

BSM Israel was an adventure for me, getting to travel to the middle east area and experience the food and culture there and also be able to compare a little the difference between the middle east country to Israel. Got to see some of the different companies that operate in Israel and how friendly and straight forward the people there are.

    BSM Israel Going Home

My Internship started the Monday after I got back. Currently still ongoing and have been doing quite interesting work for them. Don’t think I can talk about it online, but if you really want to know, just come talk to me. haha.

For the Sundown Marathon, I was really a good run as I felt really good after I ran finish. Maybe it is the night being so cooling that made the run felt so much better.

    Sundown Marathon 2009

Would not be going for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon as I would be involved in AYG. Plus with H1N1 going around, I think it might be better to avoid going overseas for the time being.

For AYG, I’m going to be doing Media Operations at SAFRA Yishun for the Shooting Event. I would also be doing Liaison Officer for the Touch Relay. The whole event is looking to be one of the biggest sporting event that Singapore has hosted ever. And I really hope that everything does goes well.

Whereas for SMUX Camp, it is shaping up to becoming a great camp all in all. And it is getting closer day by day. Hope that everyone would just hang on for just a little longer as it would be over soon.

Talking about H1N1, it has become a bigger and bigger issue from the time I went to Israel till now. And there is now more and more cases of it in Singapore. There are people that has also called for AYG to be cancelled because of it. Well what I feel is that if we don’t carry on our normal lives and live in fear of it, then it would be just too much. As long as everyone is willing to be more public minded, like if you are sick or not feeling well, go see a doctor and rest at home. And also follow the instructions in this link. I think this H1N1 can be contained.

For the Yanzi concert, found someone willing to go with me, so thanks to that person.

Well that’s the update for now. Will update more when it happens.

  • End of SE

Well, yesterday 2359 was the end of SE. The modules that has made the whole SIS year 2 cohort have countless night not getting enough sleep, specifically during the last 3 days. At least it is now over. Had a good learning experience, but I’m not expecting much of a good grade from this as I crashed my IA & test quite a bit.

This late (or super early) post is because I just got back. Went out with some of my PMSB group members & the others that I had hanged out with over the past few days doing SE. Always thought that SMUX was the only place where I would get stirred shit about. But then, now I know is that if a group of people knows you & know that you are okie with anything, you would just get stirred. Quite a nice outing we all had after the 2359 submission of all our SE project. Went to “The ONE” ktv at orchard there. Quite a good group of singer all of them are. It been quite sometime since I went to ktv to sing. Sang 2 songs.

Well it’s now time to start to mug for the upcoming exams. 2 papers. Let’s get it over and done with.

  • The week since last Friday

    Friday, 19 October 2007, 4:57 pm
Location: SMU, Library, Level 4, SMUX Corner

Well, It is been a week since my last post. Been busy with school & all my other stuff. And also just too tired to post anything.
Well let’s do something boring, going through the stuff I did for the week.

Last Friday, think I just stayed home to rest after my 2 Star. So nothing much that day.
Saturday morning had an Ad Jam Prog Meeting, lunched with John, met Marilyn & her friend at SIS opposite Kopitiam.
After that I went home to get the car to go the gathering that Jac organised. Fetched John, SY & WB to the place.
Quite confused with the area, went round in circles for like 4 times.

The gathering was quite good, just sitting around eating & talking about the internal elections results & everything else. That day also celebrated MW’s BDay.
